Ah, the 90s. A decade when Britney really was just that innocent, everybody was hanging out with f.r.i.e.n.d.s and shoulder pads were a thing.
For fashion, it was all about minimalism, clean lines and neutral colour palettes. For make-up, it was an era of neutrals; lips were brown, eye shadows were beige and hair was barely done. Call it a rebellion from the over-the-top 80s or simply a lack of creativity, but the 90s were all about less is more and it’s a style I’m digging pretty hard right now.
Just recently I was told I looked like a character from 10 Things I Hate About You, which I took as a massive compliment because a) Heath Ledger, b) it’s an amazing movie and c) Heath Ledger. In all honesty, I think it came down to the particularly fetching shade of brown lippie I was sporting. So, in the spirit of the decade I thought I’d do a post on how to get the perfect 90s lip to make Bianca Straford proud.
First step behind any good lip is a primer. I’m using MAC Prep + Prime Lip to give condition and make my colour last longer.
Next step, lip liner! Again, a lip liner is essential to make any lipstick wear longer. I’m using MAC Lip Pencil in Whirl to match my lipstick shade, however you don’t always have to match the pencil to the lipstick. I start on the top lip at the cupids bow. Use the liner to create the shape you want and don’t be afraid to go a little outside the lip to get that perfect point. On the bottom, start in the middle and work your way outwards towards the corners.
Last but not least, the actual lipstick! You can see that even after just using liner my lips are nicely coloured, but a lipstick will add the real pop of colour as well as leave lips feeling conditioned and smoother. I’m using MAC Satin Lipstick in Spirit for that neutral 90s vibe. Again, start at the cupids bow to get that shape perfect and press lips together when finished to press the colour in.
And, voila! There you have it – 90s babe eat your heart out.
