Beauty tips for when you’re hungover

Obviously, the best thing to do when hungover is draw the curtains, binge watch something on Netflix and order something extremely salty. Alas, the world is a cruel place and sometimes you actually have to leave the house EVEN THOUGH you’re hungover.

The older you get, the more real the above statement becomes and the greater need to choose makeup wisely in order to fool people into thinking you’re not terribly dehydrated.

Although it seems like a daunting task, there are some hungover beauty tips you can apply in order to look at least a little better than you feel.

First things first, you’re going to want to drink a shit tonne of water. Drinking water is my best and only life hack and is especially pertinent to your hungover state.

Speaking of hydration, your lips are probably chapped AF right now, so slather on a healing balm like the Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream or some trusty Lucas’s Paw Paw Ointment to soften up your lips whilst you apply the rest of your makeup.

You’re going to start sensing a bit of a theme here but when it comes to prepping your skin when hungover, you should be focussed on returning moisture back into the skin. No ingredient will do this better than hyaluronic acid. I speak more about this wonder ingredient in my cheatsheet for The Ordinary, but in short, any product containing hyaluronic acid is going to help boost your skin’s moisture.

Follow with a plumping primer like the Multi-Purpose Plumping Balm from MECCA. Not only will it help your makeup last longer, but something about this balm just adds radiance and boosts your skin like nothing I’ve ever used before.

Nothing says ‘not hungover at all’ more than a radiant complexion. And the best way to fake one is to add some liquid highlighter to your base product. Because we also tend to think sun-kissed skin looks healthier, I would recommend choosing a highlighter with golden undertones. My ultimate combo is a mix of the Luminosity Shimmer from ModelCo with my LB Cream from The Base in a 1:3 ratio.

Finally, finish with a cream based cheek product to add some life and colour back into your face. Because literally any amount of effort when hungover is painful, do yourself a favour and stick to something multi-purpose like the Charlotte Tilbury beach sticks. Definitely do not use a powder at this stage because, as we have discussed, your skin is seriously dehydrated and powder will only exaggerate this by exacerbating any fine lines.

Oh and a little Touche Eclat never hurt anybody.

    Oh my goodness! Primer and concealer are essential, lots of water and I always take like 4 Tylenol before I fall asleep!!!

    I totally agree with the fact that the older you get, the worse the hangover is! It makes sense to focus on radiating skin, as dull skin is such a telltale sign.
